Firth of Cromarty
Brief account of Galloways whisky wreck.
The above ship was wrecked in 1898 near Corsewall Point when on a voyage from the Clyde to Australia with a general cargo which included hundreds of cases of Scotch whisky.
Early in the 1970's the author discovered the wreck and started to uncover intact bottles of whisky. These were subsequently declared to HM Customs Receiver of Wreck and eventually returned to the author on payment of duty.

In 1991 the above three bottles of whisky went to auction selling at an average price of £1000.00 per bottle. The auction was filmed for a BBC2 programme about whisky which featured not only the auction, but also underwater footage showing the discovery and recovery of the bottles. More bottles were sold at auction and to private collectors the following year. The author still has a few bottles left for sale.
It is still possible for the lucky diver to find the odd bottle in amongst the scattered wreckage, but remember it should be declared.
